The English Football Association accused Darren Fletcher, Manchester United coach, of misconduct, due to his mistreatment of match officials at half-time during the match in which the team won over Brentford 2-1.

Fletcher was in the Old Trafford press box with United’s analysts, but made his way into the tunnel area before half-time.

The FA alleges the former United midfielder behaved in an “inappropriate and/or confrontational manner” and used “abusive and/or insulting words” towards referee Samuel Parrott and his team.

United were furious that Parrott ordered defender Matthijs de Ligt off the field to receive treatment for a head injury and then conceded a goal from a corner kick while the Dutchman was on the touchline.

Both manager Erik ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy received yellow cards for their protests at the time.

A statement issued by the FA on Friday said: “Darren Fletcher has been accused of misconduct following Manchester United’s match against Brentford on Saturday, October 20, in the English Premier League.”

“It is alleged that the coach behaved in an inappropriate and/or confrontational manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official, the referee and/or assistant referees. Darren Fletcher has until Tuesday, 29 October, to respond.”
