Manchester United season ticket holders have called for the club to consider their opinions on a new stadium more seriously than that of other fans.
The once-great Old Trafford has become a symbol of the decay in standards that the Glazer ownership has allowed to set in over the years.
This was best captured last season by a cascade of rainwater leaking from the roof after a depressing 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal in May.
Consequently, the new owners Ineos have made it a priority to appease fans and set up a taskforce to decide on the best way to improve the stadium moving forward.
Recent reports seem to indicate that the taskforce thinks that building a new 100,000 seater stadium is the best way forward due to the huge economic impact it would have for the club, surrounding area and the country as a whole.
The Daily Mail report that there could be potential trouble brewing between different fan groups over the proposals however.
The paper states that “United have been told to give greater weight to the views of season-ticket holders than other fans on the future of Old Trafford.”
The club sent a survey to season tickets and club members asking what should happen to the 115-year-old stadium.
Nonetheless, “some season-ticket holders have been left frustrated that their opinions are seen as being worth the same as a member who may never have been able to attend a match at Old Trafford.”
Others have countered this argument however by claiming numerous season ticket holders don’t attend games and pass on their seats to other supporters.
“A spokesperson for the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) told The Mail that ‘it is right that the club is consulting with all fans, but when they look at and publish the results, it is important that the responses from different types of supporters are broken down separately. As the most regular attendees, the views of season-ticket holders should be given particular close attention.’”
The future of the ground has already split certain sections of the fans as back in March the group The Red Army took exception to MUST’s view that all fans should be given a say, not only match going ones.
Certainly Ineos are keen to strike a different chord from that of the Glazers and appear to be more transparent and willing to be held accountable for their actions by opening up more regular channels for fan engagement in major decisions such as this.
