Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the second time in as many games as Manchester United drew 3-3 with Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Portugal international was sent off for two bookable offenses at the Estadio do Dragao – just days after being shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle in United’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham on Sunday.

The three-match ban for sending off was later overturned on appeal, but he was given his marching orders again as United struggled to avoid another defeat to Porto.

Fernandes was sent off in the 81st minute when he received a second yellow card for a high boot that caught defender Nehuen Pérez.

United were 3-2 down when they went off, having led 2-0 inside 20 minutes.

The loss would have increased the pressure on coach Erik ten Hag after a turbulent start to the season, but substitute Harry Maguire rescued the tie with a headed goal in the first minute of stoppage time.

Ten Hag said: “We started the match very well, controlled and scored two good goals, but then we lost control.” “The start was good, the middle part was not good and we finished the race very well.

“As you can see again, the team is willing, its character is strong, but the middle part, the defence, we have to improve.”

Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hoglund put United into an early 2-0 lead before Pepe and Samu Omorodion equalized in the first half.

Omorodion then put Porto ahead five minutes into the second half.
