Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has reportedly settled on Italian giants Lazio as his preferred next transfer destination.

Greenwood is widely expected to permanently leave United in the coming weeks following the resumption of his career in Spain with Getafe last season.

He enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Getafe as he managed 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

For his exploits under Jose Bordalas, Greenwood was recently named Getafe’s Player of the Season.

His performances alerted a number of clubs to his availability. He has been linked to numerous outfits such as Marseille, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Valencia and of course, Lazio.

Lazio in particular seem to be eager to get a deal for the Carrington academy graduate over the line after their attempt to secure his services last summer failed.

It’s believed that Lazio have already opened talks with United for Greenwood. A previous report covered by The Peoples Person even suggested that the Serie A team submitted a bid worth around €20 million but this was rejected as Old Trafford chiefs hold out for a sum of around €35 million.

A recent report explained that Lazio are set to lodge a marginally improved offer for the United star which will be accompanied by an ultimatum to accept it before July 10. If not, they will pull out of the race for Greenwood and pursue alternative targets.

According to Calciomercato, Greenwood himself is enthused by the prospect of sealing a switch to Stadio Olimpico ahead of all other potential destinations.

The publication reveals, “After a long absence from the pitch for non-football reasons –  [Greenwood] is ready to get back on track with his career. Rome is his favourite destination. The English talent is aware that in Formello they have a deep respect for him and that in the Capital he could have a role as a true protagonist, taking up the legacy of iconic players such as Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson.”

“An interesting challenge, which excites him and which has pushed him, according to what our editorial team has gathered, to put aside Marseille’s interest, choosing Lazio as his next team.”

“Strong in the will of the player, however, Lazio puts itself in a privileged position, waiting to obtain the green light to formalize what would be one of the most important moves of recent years.”

Calciomercato add that Lazio want a “big signing” to appease their fans and they view Greenwood as someone who fits the bill.
