Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Uruguayan has made up his mind since July and is waiting for United’s ‘final green light’.

Despite links to Atalanta’s Ederson, Romano claims that United are entirely focused on completing a deal for Ugarte.

The Uruguayan midfielder would be a welcome addition to the midfield, bringing some much-needed tenacity and agility.

Before kickoff in yesterday’s game against Brighton, Erik ten Hag was directly asked about the possibility of more transfers before the end of the window, to which he replied, ‘We will see. They have to be the right options.’

United’s intensity out of possession decreased after Mason Mount was taken off, similar to what happened in the opening game against Fulham.

A player like Ugarte could benefit them if they wish to play aggressively.

He might not be the most technically gifted footballer, but he excels in breaking up play and would be an instant upgrade on someone like Scott McTominay.

Ugarte would also take the load off Casemiro, who is declining.

Whether he would benefit United long-term is still to be seen.

The Red Devils would still be without an out-and-out controller in midfield, a profile they have been lacking since Nemanja Matic’s departure.

This might indicate Ten Hag’s preference to move from a possession-based system to something more aggressive and chaotic.
