Manchester United have strengthened considerably at the back and up front but are yet to do so in the middle of the park, an area in urgent need of reinforcements.
Last season, Casemiro struggled to adapt to Erik ten Hag’s high-transition style and the problem persisted even in pre-season. While the Brazilian had a good game against Manchester City in the Community Shield, his lack of pace remains a worry and a strong backup is required.
The manager’s preferred choice was Manuel Ugarte but Paris Saint-Germain’s asking price meant a deal has yet to materialise. The Red Devils could use PSG’s interest in Jadon Sancho as leverage but are currently looking at cheaper alternatives.
Sander Berge has verbally agreed to a potential summer deal but Burnley have upped their demands following United’s interest and that has not gone down well with INEOS.
Midfielder search ongoing
Youssouf Fofana is another name that keeps getting mentioned but with AC Milan also in the race, it will not be an easy transfer tussle to win.
A surprising name has been added into the mix by HITC Football — Marco Verratti, formerly of Paris Saint-Germain. He left Ligue 1 for the riches of Qatar but is open to returning to Europe after only one season there.
Intermediaries have been in touch with several Premier League sides regarding a potential deal and that includes United, fierce rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
“Premier League giants Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal have been offered the chance to pursue Marco Verratti with the Paris Saint-Germain legend potentially on his way back to Europe.
“HITC understands that the most decorated footballer in Paris Saint-Germain’s history has been offered to a number of continental giants. It is believed that he could be tempted by a move, with just one year left on his Al-Arabi contract.
Verratti offered to United
“HITC have been told that intermediaries have contacted a number of different teams claiming that Verratti may be available, even if it is yet to be confirmed whether or not he is really keen on leaving the Qatari Stars League.”
Verratti, unlike Ugarte and Casemiro, prefers not to dive into tackles but use his intelligence and game awareness to intercept while his passing ability remains world-class.
But at 31, he might not have the legs to run the midfield, especially in the English top-flight, and unlike the Glazers, INEOS are not looking at adding star names just for the sake of it.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that he wants to hire young, talented stars instead and it is unlikely that the Italian will be headed to Old Trafford this summer.
