MARIO Barrios will defend his WBC 147-pound title against Arizona hardman Abel Ramos in Texas on November 15. Hailing from San Antonio and appearing in the AT&T Stadium as part of such a huge event will be a nice stock-builder for 29-year-old ‘El Azteca’.
This will be the first defence for Barrios, 29-2 (18), of his full version title after he was elevated in status when Terence Crawford hiked up to 154. Barrios already possessed the Interim version he had won by defeating Yordenis Ugas last year. Barrios staved off the threat of Fabian Maidana in a May defence.
As for Abel Ramos, 28-6-2 (22), the 33-year-old has a history of rugged toughness, giving the better fighters trouble without getting over the line and beating them. Ramos scored a TKO victory in April in Mexico after back-to-back losses to Cody Crowley and Luke Santamaria, respectively.
Yordenis Ugas is a common opponent, having outpointed Abel by a split decision in 2020. Both of these fighters have been stopped in the past. Barrios suffered his first career loss at the dynamite fists of Gervonta Davis by 11th-round knockout in 2021, while Ramos retired after eight rounds of Regis Prograis’ heavy blows in 2015.
“These two fighters are WARRIORS who will undoubtedly leave it all out there on Friday, November 15,” stated MVP Promotions when announcing the bout.
Katie Taylor rematches Amanda Serrano on the same card, which also features Indian middleweight Neeraj Goyat in a six-rounder. For better or worse, Mike Tyson takes part in an eight-twos headliner versus Jake Paul at the top of this event, broadcast on Netflix.
