The Michigan Panthers may be looking for a third quarterback now that their QB room is down a member. Davis Cheek was placed on the retired list on Monday.
Cheek was originally drafted by the Panthers in the UFL Dispersal Draft in January, spending last year with the New Orleans Breakers in the USFL but only playing in one game without attempting a throw. He also did a stint in the NFL on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad.
During his four seasons at Elon, Cheek threw for 8,548 yards and 51 touchdowns to 21 interceptions in 40 games. He also ran for 147 yards and six touchdowns. His accolades include being named Second Team All-CAA in 2021 after throwing for 2,924 yards and 17 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
This leaves Michigan with Danny Etling and E.J. Perry battling for the starting quarterback job with less than two weeks before the season starts. The team could look to add another quarterback to the roster in the upcoming days, but it will likely be Etling or Perry taking the Week 1 snaps for the team.
Michigan opens the season at home on Saturday, March 30 against the St. Louis Battlehawks.
