STARKVILLE – Mississippi State head football coach Jeff Lebby announced the hiring of Mason Walters as the program’s new director of football sports science.
“Adding this position continues to strengthen our commitment to student-athlete success at Mississippi State,” Lebby said. “Mason will be a tremendous addition to our staff. His track record and experience speak for itself, and we are excited for the impact he will have on our program.”
In his role, Walters will oversee all football sports science operations. He will be tasked with evaluating and monitoring player performance by gathering data to optimize athlete training, performance and return to sport through state-of-the-art technology. Walters will work closely with the strength and conditioning, sports medicine, sports nutrition and sports psychology staff.
“The opportunity to join the Mississippi State family and serve our student-athletes is an incredible honor,” Walters said. “I couldn’t be more excited for the future of Mississippi State football and to be a part of this outstanding staff that has been assembled here in Starkville.”
Before joining the Mississippi State football staff, Walters was the head strength and conditioning coach for the United States Olympic and Paralympic teams starting in 2018. While working with Team USA, he worked primarily with combat and acrobat sports such as USA Wrestling, USA Boxing, USA Karate and USA Gymnastics.
While working with Team USA, he worked with 29 combat and acrobat Olympic sports, facilitating performance preparations for events around the world. He was tasked with conducting and organizing international neuromuscular analysis for athlete competition readiness, creating assessments with force plates and critical power tests, and collaborating on heat and humidity investigations for optimal preparations for the Tokyo Olympics.
During his time with Team USA, Walters also worked with the US Army Special Operations (2019-20) as a volunteer performance specialist and the University of New Mexico Men’s Basketball team as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant (2018-19).
From 2014-17, Walters was the head assistant strength and conditioning coach for the United States Air Force Academy Football team. While working at the Air Force Academy, he oversaw the varsity athlete performance preparation, managed physiological testing and program execution for Spring and Summer training and organized body composition assessments for 150+ cadets.
Walters is a certified strength and conditioning coach by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and certified in First Aid, CPR and AED by the American Heart Association.
Walters received his bachelor of science degree in sport and exercise science from the University of Northern Colorado in 2014 and his master’s in strength and conditioning from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 2020.
