World No. 1 golfer Nelly Korda has withdrawn from next week’s Ladies European Tour Championship in England after being bitten by a dog, the women’s golfer said in a statement on Instagram on Friday.
Korda, 25, was scheduled to play in the LET Aramco Team Series from Wednesday to Friday at the Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead, England. Last year, she won the 54-hole tournament outside London by four strokes over Charlie Hull for her third career victory.
“I regret to announce that I must withdraw from next week’s Ladies European Tour Championship in London,” Korda said in a statement. “On Saturday in Seattle, I was bitten by a dog and will need time to receive treatment and fully recover.”
Korda did not mention the location of the dog bite. She was competing in the KPMG Women’s Championships last week at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., where she missed out for the third time in as many starts.
“I apologize to the LET, the sponsors and the fans for my absence,” Korda said. “Thank you for your understanding, I look forward to getting back on the course soon.”
Korda did not say when she would return to the courts. The LPGA Tour is taking a break after this week’s Dow Championship in Midland, Michigan. The next major scheduled for the season is the fourth major, the Amundi Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France, which will be played from July 11 to 14.
After becoming the fourth LPGA golfer to win six times before June 1, including five straight victories with her second major title at the Chevron Championship on April 18, Korda has largely calmed down. She missed the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open, the Meijer LPGA Classic and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Korda, the defending Olympic gold medalist, is scheduled to represent the United States in the women’s golf tournament from Aug. 7-10 at Le Golf National outside Paris.
