Manchester United have confirmed that new signing Joshua Zirkzee will sport the No.11 shirt ahead of his maiden season at the club.

Last month, United unveiled Zirkzee as their first summer arrival from Serie A club Bologna.

Erik ten Hag’s side warded off competition from the likes of AC Milan and Arsenal to land the promising striker, who played a huge part in Bologna’s 2023/24 campaign as they secured Champions League football for the first time in 50 years.

It emerged that United agreed to pay the Rossoblu €42.5 million, a slightly higher fee than his €40 million release clause but one that will be spread out in installments.

Zirkzee put pen to paper on a five-year deal, with the option of an additional 12 months.

United have now relayed via their official website that Zirkzee – after his exploits at Euro 2024 where he helped the Netherlands reach the semi-final – has been handed the No. 11 shirt.

“Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has been confirmed as the club’s new no.11 ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 season.”

“He takes the squad place from Rasmus Hojlund, who will wear another iconic shirt, no.9.”

Zirkzee wore the No. 11 shirt during his first campaign at Bologna before he was upgraded to the No. 9 last season.

The Dutchman also sported the No. 11 during his time at Bayern Munich and at youth level in his home country.

The United No.11 has been famously work by Ryan Giggs, who holds the club record for the most appearances (963). Other holders of the iconic shirt include Sir Bobby Charlton, Sammy McIlroy and Lee Sharpe.

Other legends such as George Best and Denis Law also had the No. 11 at various stages of their respective United careers.

Fans may get the chance to see Zirkzee in action with the number on his back when United meet Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this weekend in the Community Shield.
