Championship club Plymouth Argyle have officially confirmed that Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney will be their new manager.

Rooney succeeds Ian Forster, who was sacked in April after an extremely poor run of results.

The job is Rooney’s first managerial role since he was sacked by Birmingham City in January after losing nine of his 15 games in charge.

When Rooney took over at Birmingham City, they were in the Championship play-offs but were relegated to League One earlier this month.

As well as Birmingham City, Rooney previously managed Derby County and Major League Soccer at DC United.

Rooney will be joined at Argyle by first-team coaches Kevin Nancekivell and Simon Ireland, and goalkeeping expert Darryl Flahavan.

Further staffing will be done in due course.

United’s record goalscorer said: “This role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the chairman and the board for the faith they have shown in me.”

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a team of players who will play expansive football – and entertain the Green Army.”

“I’ve experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players are here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park. The club is on an exciting long-term path, with a progressive plan. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.”

“I can’t wait for the championship season to start in August.”

Argyle chief executive Andrew Parkinson and chairman Simon Hallett also expressed their delight at having Rooney on board.
