Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is worried about Andre Onana heading into the new season.
INEOS’s arrival has injected optimism at United, with many fans keen on seeing the impact of their decisions made ahead of the new campaign.
Apart from making several high-profile appointments to reshape the club’s football structure, the new decision-makers have also reshuffled Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, adding Ruud van Nistelrooy and René Hake to the mix.
Accordingly, despite only two major signings and mixed results during the pre-season, many United fans are excited. However, Scholes is struggling to share the same level of optimism.
Speaking during the fan discussion on The Overlap, the former midfielder said: “I’ve heard a lot of Manchester United fans say how excited they are for the new season, I’m struggling with that.”
In particular, Scholes shared his worries concerning the goalkeeping department.
“I still worry about the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper is a big concern for me. Even in pre-season with some of the goals he conceded. I worry to death about him,” the 49-year-old added.
Onana’s start to life at United was far from convincing, and the former Inter Milan number one made several glaring errors during the group phase of the Champions League.
However, the 28-year-old found his feet during the second half of the campaign, impressing many with his proactive approach. He also emerged as a prominent vocal presence in the penalty box for his side.
Onana, meanwhile, has asked United fans to tighten their seatbelts, as he is prepared to take more risks in his second term at Old Trafford.
“I will take a lot of risks. I can tell you in advance already! Be prepared because it’s going to be this season, trust me! I will enjoy it even more when this season starts,” he revealed in an interview.
One of the big reasons United replaced David De Gea with Onana is the latter’s ability to help his side during build-up—a responsibility that demands plenty of technical prowess as well as risk-taking ability in the face of the opposition’s high pressing.
As such, it is certainly exciting to see that Onana relishes the prospect of playing a more progressive style of football. Wonder how Scholes would react if United concede a goal or two because of Onana’s adventurous style this season.
