Rodolfo Borrell will leave Manchester City for a role with him Major League Soccer side Austin FC.

The Spaniard has been one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted assistants during his time at the club, but will leave after nine years in Manchester.

He will take on the role of sporting director with Austin, replacing former Manchester City player Claudio Reyna, who resigned from the post in January.

Borrell joined City from Liverpool in 2014 before being appointed as assistant first-team coach when Guardiola arrived in 2016.

Borrell has been a key backroom figure throughout Guardiola’s culminating tenure Premier League, FA Cup AND Champions League wins in the 2022-23 season.

He will join Enzo Maresca, another member of Guardiola’s coaching team, in leaving the club this summer.

The Italian left earlier this month to become manager of Leicester City.

It’s not the first time Borrell has discussed an exit to the US. in 2020, he held talks with DC United about their coaching role.

Austin is currently eighth in the Western Conference after 19 games of the MLS season.
