Below is an excerpt from Sport Business Journal’s “Around the World” article that highlights major events in global sports in the coming years, including the first Special Olympics World Games in Latin America in Santiago, Chile in 2027.

Santiago will host the 2027 Special Olympics World Games, making the Chilean capital the first city in Latin America to host the event. The decision by the Special Olympics International Board of Directors places the event in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time in its 55-year history. The federal and city governments have allocated $134 million for the World Games, which are expected to attract more than 6,000 Special Olympics athletes from more than 170 countries. Santiago hosted the Pan American and Parapan American Games in the fall, investing $507 million in event venues (Rachel Axon, SBJ).
