Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay scored Scotland’s only goal in their Euro 2024 group stage second leg against Switzerland.
Scotland found themselves trailing 5-1 in their tournament opener, but Steve Clarke’s men quickly overcame that to get a big result against Switzerland, who were undoubtedly favourites.
In the 13th minute, McTominay latched onto an inside cross and sent a powerful shot past Fabian Schar on its way to the back of the net.
Scotland’s lead did not last long as Xherdan Shaqiri restored parity less than 15 minutes later.
Both sides had a look at the goal, but neither could break through the opposing defense. Towards the end, Scotland were the most aggressive side and it looked like they would run out of winners. Unfortunately, it was not to be.
However, the Tartan Army can take plenty of positives from their performance and the fact that they still have a chance of making it to the knockout stages, provided they can beat Hungary on Sunday and hope Germany can get something against Switzerland.
During his time on the field, McTominay recorded two hits. One was on target, for his own goal. The second did not require Yann Sommer to spring into action.
The United midfielder registered 43 touches of the ball and successfully completed 14 of the 20 passes he attempted. Two of his passes were crucial passes.
He drew one Swiss foul and struck out three times.
McTominay had one interception to his name. He won one of the two aerial duels he engaged in and two of the four aerial duels he had to fight.
The Carrington Academy graduate did not engage in dribbles or attempt to ping the long ball. Three of the five passes he attempted to find teammates connected successfully.

If Scotland are to sink Hungary, they will almost certainly need their talisman, McTominay, to be at his best.
