“We are so excited,” Shahad exclaimed at the start of their adventure. Abdulrahman echoed the sentiment, adding: “Yes, I am excited to be on the council alongside my sister and to meet people from all over the world.”

This opportunity is especially meaningful to Shahd, who said: “I’ve always felt close to this community. I’ve always wanted to give them a safe space where they can be themselves.” Her passion for inclusion and commitment to creating safe spaces for others has been a longstanding one. “So being around people who share the same passion as me made me want to join the board,” she continued.

“Since I was little, we shared the same school, the same life. So, I’ve been involved in inclusion my whole life,” Shahad said of their journey. This lifelong connection shaped their understanding and advocacy for inclusion. “That connection between us, the love that everyone saw between us, made it work,” she explained. “I reflected that to everyone. So, I think it made them respect us, respect him, accept him for who he is, and then it made him feel safe. He had a safe place with me. So, he could be himself and act like that.”

Their trip to Washington, D.C., wasn’t just for business, it was also an opportunity to make new friends and strengthen bonds with like-minded peers. “Making new friends was the best part of the trip,” said Abdulrahman.
