SHAKIEL Thompson had too much firepower for River Wilson-Bent, scoring an impressive third-round knockout. The more experienced fighter, Wilson-Bent was drawn into a shoot-out with Thomspon. Thompson’s power had the Coventry man ruffled in round two and down heavily at the close of that same round.
Building on that success, the Sheffield puncher had his wiry foe sitting down for another count in round three. Wilson-Bent was shipping huge shots and touched down for a third time before referee Michael Alexander waved it off at 2-58 following a fourth visit to the canvas. Headlining the GBM event in Sheffield, Shakiel Thompson improved to 13-0 (9 KOs), while River Wilson-Bent fell to 17-5-2 (7 KOs).
In what was expected to be a competitive contest, Ryan Walsh flipped his fight with Recce Mould on its head, scoring a thrilling first-round knockout. Well-supported Mould was dropped and clearly hurt by a right-left combination. Mould rose but was down again shortly after from a barrage. Referee Steve Gray gave him every opportunity as the Doncaster man stalled and stumbled to the canvas for a third time.
Hughie Fury was made to work hard for his 78-76 victory over German unit Christian Thun. At 6’9” ‘The Hurricane’ had put in the work over in Florida and was happy to wrestle with switch-hitting Fury. Eager to find a way on the Riyadh Season circuit, 30-year-old Fury needs to get a move on if he is fulfill his long-running potential.
Maxi Hughes overcame the spirited challenge of Efstathios Antonas, stopping the Greek fighter in round six. Returning six months after a loss to William Zepeda, Hughes let Antonas empty the tank in round five and caught his foe with a cracking right hook to drop him in the final round. Antonas rose but was stopped by a straight left hand moments later.
Tysie Gallagher defended her Commonwealth bantamweight title by unanimous decision over 10 rounds against Tori Ellis-Willetts. Gallagher scored a knockdown in round two.
