Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Saturday’s 42-10 loss to Alabama, ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirmed.
Van Dyke suffered the injury in Wisconsin’s first game while running down the sideline. His knee appeared to buckle before he was struck by Alabama’s Keanu Cote. Doctors had to take Van Dyke to the injury tent and then to the locker room. He appeared on the Wisconsin sideline after halftime in regular clothes and on crutches, his right leg wrapped in a large bandage.
Coach Luke Fickell said after the game that Van Dyke would undergo an MRI on Sunday, but the initial prognosis was not promising for the veteran. Sophomore Brayden Locke replaced Van Dyke in the game and completed 13 of 26 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Wisconsin has an open week, so Fickell has not spoken to reporters since Saturday.
Van Dyke moved from Miami to Wisconsin after starting 28 games and racking up 7,469 passing yards and 54 touchdowns. He had his best season in 2021, earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors after passing for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns.
The Wisconsin State Journal was first to report that Van Dyke is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Wisconsin next plays on Sept. 28 against No. 11-ranked USC.
