On April 24, Special Olympics announced that for the first time the Special Olympics World Games will be held in 2027 in the Latin American region in Santiago, Chile.
At a press event in Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC On Wednesday, Special Olympics Brazil’s athlete leader and director of the International CouncilEmmanuel Dutra de SouzaAnnounced that the organization of the Special Olympics World Games 2027 has been awarded to Santiago de Chile. The announcement was led by Special Olympics President Timothy Shriver, Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, Permanent Representative of Chile to the Organization of American States, Sebastian Kraljevic And leader of the Santiago 2027 bid, Chilean Sports Minister Jaime Pizarro Herrera.
After the announcement, the audience was invited to participate in a Unified Sports Experience with Special Olympics athletes in DC. There were three stations set up for soccer, passing, dribbling and shooting drills, and both athletes and Unified partners were able to come together, united through sport, and learn about the impact of the 2027 World Games in Santiago.
