The San Antonio Spurs have shut down rookie point guard Stephon Castle for the remainder of the Vegas Summer League because of a right wrist sprain, the team told the San Antonio Express-News.
Castle was selected with the fourth overall pick in last month’s draft. He suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of his first summer league game, an 83-77 win over Portland Trail Blazers and his former UConn teammate Donovan Clingan. Castle finished that game with 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
“It sucks to sit out, but I was happy to see my teammates play well,” Castle said after sitting out Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Hawks.
“I feel like they have my best interests in mind,” Castle said of being shut down. “I feel like it’s smart to take the caution route.”
While Castle was seen wearing a wrap on his wrist while sitting on the bench Sunday, the injury is not considered serious.
