SUNNY EDWARDS and GALAL YAFAI will settle their rivalry in Birmingham on November 30.

The two British flyweights have long been linked to a fight against one another and the speculation intensified when Edwards joined Yafai at Matchroom in March 2023.

At that time Edwards was the reigning IBF Flyweight world champion with an undefeated record of 19-0, (4 KOs) while Yafai only had three fights to his name. Given his amateur pedigree, however, the Birmingham fighter had his eye on world titles as soon as he joined Eddie Hearn’s stable in January 2022.

The 2020 Olympic Gold Medallist is now undefeated in seven contests but Edwards lost his unbeaten record and world title to the brilliant Jesse Rodriguez last December. After his return and victory against Adrian Curiel in June Boxing News asked Edwards about a potential fight against Yafai.

“The only two names that were mentioned to me in this contract were Curiel and Galal. If that’s my next two fights, buzzing. That’s a good year’s work. Good events. Chief support one and headline another. Sounds perfect. Olympic Gold Medallist versus former world champion that boxed as amateurs.”

Edwards, 28, is eager to become a two-time world champion but knows that defeat to Yafai would dent those hopes. The 31-year-old Yafai needs to not only win against Edwards but in 2025 fight for a world title while time is still on his side at a smaller weight class.
