After a wild decision day that saw multiple teams in the East pick up results away from home, Philadelphia Union hung on the top seed there, which will give them a bye past the first round and into the conference semifinals.
LAFC, who already won the Supporters’ Shield and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, fell 1-0 in Nashville SC in the West, which saw a lot of movement in the no. 3-7 as the day goes on.
Out West, The real Salt Lake dominated Portland Timbers in a 3-1 win that saw Salt Lake sneak into the final playoff spot by a single point over the Timbers. Minnesota UnitedVancouver’s emphatic 2-0 win eliminated the shootout White hatsWHEREAS GalaxyHe wins 3-1 against Houston secured a playoff game at home against Nashville SC.
Much of the excitement on Judgment Day in the East came at The crew of Columbus vs. Orlando City SC game, where Orlando came back from a goal down for a 2-1 win over Columbus thanks to a penalty kick called due to a Milos Degenek handball in the box at the end of the second half. Facundo Torres buried the resulting field goal, which was enough to get Orlando into the playoffs over Columbus. The loss continued the Crew’s season-long trend of dropping points from last-place winning positions — in total, Columbus dropped 24 points in 2022 from those positions.
Elsewhere in the East, New York Red Bulls past made easy Charlotte FC to assure themselves of hosting their first round playoff game, NYCFC won 2-1 in Atlanta to do the same, and Montreal beat Inter Miami 3-1. Cincinnati had a convincing win of their own, beating DC United 5-2 at Audi Field to secure the club’s first ever play-off berth.
