Integration day with the final stage team and athletes from Syria during host city activities

Below is an excerpt from UEFA Euro 2024 Voluntary Programme This is inspired and based on Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 Host City Program.

Diversity and Inclusion is one of four action areas in the social pillar of the UEFA EURO 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, ensuring that the tournament is open to everyone and that every social group can be part of the celebrations.

This includes providing accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities, and the city of Cologne places particular emphasis on this through its “Volunteer Tandem” programme.

Elena, UEFA Euro 2024 volunteer and Tandem partner:

“The extra effort to enable the participation of people with intellectual disabilities from the volunteer team in Cologne is absolutely fantastic. I am very pleased to support the inclusive volunteer program by being a tandem partner.”

The inspiration for this initiative came during the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, the largest comprehensive sporting event in the world. The host city program during the event, which welcomed athletes at 200 sites across Germany, was the largest community inclusion project in German history, and spurred the organizers of the Euro 2024 Championships in Cologne to follow this example of inclusivity.
