Mason Greenwood has no shortage of suitors as his Manchester United career comes to an almost inevitable end.

Various reports have linked the 22-year-old with a move to Juventus in recent days, with some saying he has given a yes to the project and others even saying the Old Lady have already earned or are about to earn €40 million. (euro) offer.

However, according to A mirrorwhile Juve are indeed making an offer worth “£40m with add-ons”, the player is not at all keen and is desperate to stay in Spain.

The outlet claim that La Liga side Valencia have made a £25m offer for the academy graduate and while Juve’s bid is closer to United’s valuation, “a source close to Greenwood’s camp confirmed a ‘concrete offer’ from Valencia and insisted ‘his priority is Spain’ after the season loan at Getafe.”

The report also claims that “Napoli have even held formal talks with United over a potential deal” and that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid retain an interest.

While all of the above could be true, as a package of information it takes quite a leap of faith to believe.

First, Juventus can offer Champions League football, almost certainly a much higher salary than Valencia and, in general, a stronger platform for a player whose ambition is to reach the top of the game. Reports that he agreed to the deal have a tinge of truth.

Secondly, the claim that Juve have offered or will offer £40m has been refuted by the Italian media, who pretty much all agree that the Bianconeri must sell before they can buy. It is also widely reported in Italy that in any case Juve believe the player is overvalued at €40m (euro), let alone £40m (pounds).

Thirdly, the claim that Valencia made an offer is not at all confirmed by the Spanish media, and there is not even a hint in the Valencia specialist paper Superdeporte that los Ché is even considering the pursuit of Greenwood. Given the Spanish press’s endless enthusiasm for perpetuating transfer rumours, this would be highly unusual if there was any truth to the rumours.

Wherever Greenwood ends up playing football next season, it’s unlikely that Getafe will be the ones looking to take him out on loan again.

Another season-long loan would see Greenwood run out of his contract at United, so their only chance of getting some income from his sale is to act now.

He is also unlikely to return to United due to the political and ethical minefield of his arrest in 2022 for attempted rape and aggravated assault.
