Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has blamed Erik ten Hag for the clash with Jadon Sancho, although he admitted the England forward made his own mistakes.
Sancho and Ten Haag had an argument at the beginning of September last year, and their dispute broke out in public.
The current United boss told reporters that Sancho had been left out of the matchday squad that traveled to the Emirates to face Arsenal due to his poor performances in training.
In response, Sancho issued a strongly worded statement on social media in which he essentially accused the Dutchman of being a liar and using him as a scapegoat for the team’s struggles on the pitch.
The leaders of the clubs made efforts to repair the relationship between the two, but nothing worked. Ten Haag and Sancho could not resolve their problems by agreement, so the decision was made to send the 24-year-old on loan to Borussia Dortmund during the winter transfer window.
At Signal Iduna Park, Sancho found some of the form that convinced United to spend big to secure his services back in 2021.
He played a key role for Dortmund in their run to the Champions League final, notably excelling in both legs of the semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking on TNT Sports hours before Dortmund’s clash with Real Madrid at Wembley, Mourinho weighed in on the tumultuous situation between the forward and Ten Hague.
The Portuguese coach said: “As a player, we know his talent. We’ve seen what he can do, there’s no doubt about that.”
“What happened at Man United… if I look at my history, sometimes I failed with the players. Sometimes I couldn’t create the right empathy, I couldn’t understand the player’s DNA and I couldn’t help the players grow in the right direction. Most of the time, yes, I did it, but on some occasions I couldn’t.”
“I think sometimes we have to learn from experience, which I’ve always tried to do, to try to understand the nature of the players. Sometimes they have talent but they don’t have the mindset you want from a player.”
“Sure, the kid (Sancho) made mistakes, that’s for sure, but certainly his manager couldn’t get the best out of him.”
When asked if Sancho was let down by United, Mourinho replied: “Normally, it’s multi-factorial. Usually it’s not the manager, the player, the family, the agent, the club.”
“But looking at myself as a coach, many times I got the best out of young players and helped them be what they were in the future. I failed the second time. Certainly, even if it is multifactorial, we are part of it. For us coaches with more experience and a lot of deja vu situations, as we get older, we try to help the players in the right direction.”
