Fernando Alonso ended a rain-hit first day of practice for the Canadian Grand Prix at the top of the times, taking advantage of some early dry running in FP2 to set the benchmark.

Both of Friday’s sessions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve were affected by rain, with FP1 almost entirely wet and FP2 starting in the dry before more showers struck the Montreal venue.

When it was dry, Alonso produced a time of 1m 15.810s on soft tyres to lead Mercedes rival George Russell by just under half a second, while Aston Martin team mate and home favourite Lance Stroll completed the top three positions.
