He has transformed Inter Miami from a barely under-the-radar young franchise to the biggest team in the league.
By some measures, Messi’s time in Miami has already been an undoubted success, regardless of what happens from here.

GREG COTE POLL Dance: LIONEL MESSI
Does Inter Miami have to win an MLS Cup league championship for Lionel Messi playing here to be judged a success?
Last week’s Poll Dance verdict: Oh. I’m sorry, Tua. We asked, “Should the Dolphins extend QB Tua Tagovailoa to a lucrative long-term contract this offseason?” Your answer: 83 percent said, “No. He’s signed until 2024, so there’s no rush. Wait and see.” And 17 percent said, “Yes. He’s proven worthy of the going rate for a top quarterback.” Note: These surveys are NO and do not pretend to be scientific. In fact, 63 percent of scientists hate Greg Cote’s Poll Dance.
