Midfield was an area of weakness for Manchester United during the last campaign as the players failed to adapt to manager Erik ten Hag’s new style of play.
The Dutchman’s midfield partnership of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro struggled to play this high-transition style and the duo were exposed in big games for their lack of pace.
The Brazilian continued to play whenever it suited him and it was a big surprise to see him miss the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final.
The manager decided to play Sofyan Amrabat from the start despite his shaky display a week ago in the last game of the season against Brighton.
Amrabat’s loan
The on-loan midfielder put in arguably his best appearance in a red shirt with pundits and ex-pros all hailing his impact with clamor growing for the club to make his loan move permanent.
It was difficult for the Moroccan to adapt to the pace of England’s top tier, and his arrival due to the lack of a proper pre-season did not help either.
Playing a defensive midfielder at left-back did little to boost the Fiorentina ace’s confidence and at one point it seemed the club had made a big mistake.
But with Casemiro likely to leave Old Trafford, keeping the 27-year-old might not be the worst idea as he knows the manager and what is expected of him and hopefully, with a proper pre-season, he can really show what he is capable of.
The player has expressed his desire to stay and the Red Devils just need to activate the clause to make his move permanent. There is a lot of interest in Amrabat’s services, both in the Premier League and in Italy.
As reported by TMW, former United striker and current Milan senior adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic is interested in bringing the Morocco international to the San Siro.
The Swede believes the 2022 World Cup hero’s skills are quite different to what is already available at Milan, and his low price makes him an attractive proposition with the 20-time English champions likely to keep him.
“Sofyan Amrabat will return to Fiorentina, but in all probability he will not stay there. The midfielder would like to continue playing in the Premier League, where he did not shine much with United, except in the FA Cup match against neighbors City, which brought the Red Devils the trophy.

“The 25 million to reconfirm him – after 10 million on loan last summer – seems too much. Thus, Amrabat will return to Italy with one year less than his contract, which expires in 2025, and with the intention of playing in the Champions League.
“In that sense, Milan could be a very welcome destination. Zlatan Ibrahimović likes Amrabat and sees him as a player different from everyone else in the team. The estimate is realistically between 10 and 15 million, while the salary is not a problem because in Viola he earned less than half of the 4 net in Manchester.”
United are reportedly planning to sign more than one midfielder and if they keep Amrabat, there may be no need to add another midfielder.
The final budget and new-look staff will come to an end. For now, all eyes are on the final outcome of the season preview.
