Manchester United are currently in the middle of trying to sign a defensive midfielder but Erik ten Hag is also short on the left-side of the defence, a problem that had plagued him last season as well.

Luke Shaw has suffered an injury in pre-season while Tyrell Malacia’s problems, which kept him out for the whole of last season, have continued and he is not expected back before October.

The England international was also ruled out after the first few games last time out and the club was forced to bring in Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

He did impress in certain games, especially while moving forward, impressing former United star Owen Hargreaves who said, “Reguilon’s done fantastic getting forward,” during United’s game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last term.

LB issues last season

The Spaniard lasted until January when his short-term deal was terminated with Shaw coming back to fitness. That did not last long, which meant the decision to send back the former Real Madrid star was not the smartest call.

Ten Hag had to play Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof in that position due to the lack of options and those moves did not pay off.

Noussair Mazraoui has been brought in this summer for his ability to also play on the left but he is a right-back by trade. Diogo Dalot had started the game on the left against Fulham.

The Dutch manager would prefer another specialist option but it has been relayed by The Peoples Person that the club are not currently looking to bring someone in.

However, a setback in Shaw’s return schedule or the Moroccan suffering injury could change all that. And Reguilon, who had spent the second-half of last season at Brentford, would love to come back to Manchester as per Fabrizio Romano.

Reguilon would love to return

“Another player who would love to return to Manchester United is Sergio Reguilon. He was already at the club one year ago and he would be really open to returning,” Romano told TBR.

“Man United are really aware of his situation at Tottenham and that may be an opportunity again in the final days because he has to leave Tottenham in the final days.”

A temporary move could work as the club’s earlier plan involved either finding a decent free agent or dipping into the loan market.

The Red Devils have been keeping their options open with former Barcelona, and Chelsea star Marcos Alonso and Mario Hermoso, formerly of Atletico Madrid, both linked with a move to Old Trafford.
